Switzerland had been high on our travel bucket list for a long time – and for good reason. The country offers countless breathtaking photo spots in a relatively small area, which means you can discover a lot within just a few days.
In this guide, we’ll show you our favorite photo spots in Switzerland and share the best time to capture them in perfect light.
P.S.: Check out our road trip itinerary through Switzerland to find all the details you need for planning a scenic adventure through the Swiss Alps.

Top Photo Spots in Switzerland
1. Zermatt – Matterhorn, Gornergrat & Riffelsee
Zermatt is without a doubt one of the most iconic photo spots in Switzerland. This is where you’ll find the legendary Matterhorn, which you probably recognize from the Toblerone chocolate packaging.
To capture the Matterhorn in all its glory, take the train from Täsch to the car-free mountain village of Zermatt. From the village itself, you’ll already enjoy a stunning view of the peak. But don’t miss the cogwheel railway to Gornergrat, where the panoramic view of the Matterhorn is simply unbeatable.
A short hike from the Gornergrat station takes you to Riffelsee Lake, where the Matterhorn reflects beautifully in the water. Of course, you’ll need some luck with the weather – in our case, the peak was shy and hiding behind the clouds.

Zermatt itself also offers endless photography opportunities: traditional wooden chalets, charming alleys, and of course, the ever-present Matterhorn backdrop.

2. Grindelwald – Panoramas, Bachalpsee & Wildlife Photography
Another must-visit photo location in Switzerland is Grindelwald in the Bernese Oberland. If you love photographing nature and wildlife, this is your place to be.
Take the gondola up to First Mountain, and if possible, spend at least one night in this hotel. This gives you more time to explore and allows you to make the most of the magical sunrise and sunset light conditions.

Right near the cable car station, you’ll find a marmot trail – a real highlight! Here, spotting the playful little animals is almost guaranteed, as there are so many living in the area. Capturing them with your camera, however, requires patience and a bit of luck. We were extra lucky and even spotted a fox one evening.
Another highlight is the hike to Bachalpsee, which takes about 45 minutes from the gondola station. Surrounded by snow-covered peaks and lush green meadows, this lake is among the most photographed in Switzerland.
For unique shots with fewer crowds, we recommend staying overnight at this hotel and starting your hike early in the morning. The soft sunrise light creates an unforgettable atmosphere.

💡 Planning tip: Book your accommodation well in advance – there’s only one lodging option on the mountain, and it’s very popular, especially during peak travel season.
3. Waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen – Staubbach & Trümmelbach
Next on our list of Switzerland’s best photo spots: the waterfalls of Lauterbrunnen Valley.
With its 72 waterfalls, Lauterbrunnen is often described as one of the most beautiful valleys in Switzerland. The Staubbach Falls, dropping 300 meters, are already a breathtaking sight from the village itself.
Take your time to explore the valley on foot. You’ll come across beautiful waterfalls again and again. Be prepared, though: some of the falls are very popular tourist spots, and you might need to wait a bit to capture that perfect perspective. 4. Furka Pass & Hotel Belvedere – A James Bond Filming Location
The Furka Pass is a dream for both landscape photographers and James Bond fans. The winding mountain road cuts through a dramatic alpine backdrop, offering countless stops for spectacular shots.
One of the most iconic spots here is the Hotel Belvedere, from which you have a direct view of the Rhone Glacier.

It’s no surprise that this setting was immortalized in the James Bond film Goldfinger. Travelers with a camper or rooftop tent will also find overnight options here – the perfect chance to enjoy an unforgettable sunrise with alpine panorama.
5. Fiesch – Eggishorn & Aletsch Glacier
This time, the weather was on our side! Watching the sunrise over the Aletsch Glacier was simply magical and a true goosebump moment. From Fiesch, a cable car takes you up to Eggishorn, where, on a clear day, the view even stretches as far as the Matterhorn.
But the highlight is, without a doubt, the Aletsch Glacier – at 23 kilometers, it’s the largest glacier in the Alps. Witnessing the sunrise from here is an experience you’ll never forget.
