At the end of our 3-week road trip through Namibia, we decided to spend some time at the private nature reserve Kuzikus. Located on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, this incredible place offers a perfect way to end your journey in comfort, observe an abundance of wildlife, and learn more about the area from the resident biologists.
Here’s everything we experienced during our 3-day stay at the Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve.

What Is the Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve?
The Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve is a family-run conservation area located on the edge of the Kalahari Desert—a true paradise for nature lovers. Originally a cattle farm, the owners have spent years restoring it to its natural state.

Unlike the often crowded national parks, this private wildlife reserve offers a more intimate and authentic experience of nature.
Kuzikus is deeply committed to wildlife conservation, particularly of black rhinos, as well as the protection of the fragile desert ecosystem. Here, you can observe animals in their natural habitat while staying in an environment that’s both comfortable and sustainable.
One of the standout features is the opportunity to spend time with the host family. They are experts in their fields and love sharing their knowledge with guests. You immediately feel warmly welcomed and can sense their passion for their work in the reserve.
In Kuzikus, you’ll encounter black rhinos, springboks, antelopes, and a variety of other wildlife.
For us, the goal was to relax in nature’s serenity, enjoy the familial atmosphere, and wind down our journey in a comfortable setting. We found exactly that at Kuzikus.
Getting to Kuzikus Wildlife Reserve
We drove from the Quiver Tree Forest in Keetmanshoop to Kuzikus, a journey that took around 5 hours. The drive itself was an adventure, with endless savannah landscapes and the red sand dunes of the Kalahari providing stunning views. The last stretch involves a gravel road—although a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended for driving in Namibia in general.
We had some difficulty finding the entrance, as Google Maps led us to a closed gate. If you face the same issue, simply continue straight ahead until you spot a sign for Kuzikus. Don’t be alarmed—the road seems longer than expected.

Once you enter the reserve, you’ll pass through a few gates before arriving at a small, paradise-like section of the property.
Kuzikus was the last stop on our 3-week Namibia adventure and was the perfect choice since it’s only about 2.5 hours from Windhoek Airport.
Accommodation and Food at Kuzikus
The accommodations at Kuzikus include several structures: a research station, a covered dining area, a horse stable, a workshop, the owners’ residence, and a comfortable tourist lodging complex.

There’s also a small pool area and a library/hunting room you can use. The library is filled with fascinating books on wildlife, nature, indigenous tribes, and Namibia’s colonial history.

Kuzikus is lovingly maintained and beautifully designed—a true gem surrounded by wilderness.
Our room featured a small veranda with an incredible view. The interiors were tastefully decorated with comfortable beds and an en-suite bathroom.

The meals at Kuzikus were another highlight. Each day started with a hearty breakfast, followed by light dishes for lunch, afternoon cake, and dinner featuring Namibian specialties like grilled game meat and fresh vegetables—all served in a cozy setting. All meals are shared with the host family, which adds a special, personal touch.

Safaris at Kuzikus
Kuzikus offers multiple safaris daily. One of the absolute highlights of our Namibia trip was tracking rhinos on foot with Fritz (one of the owners and a biologist), his dog, and two Bushmen. This was one of the most authentic experiences we’ve ever had, providing an opportunity to learn so much about these magnificent animals.
The tracking skills of the Bushmen were particularly impressive. They often moved ahead of us, following the rhinos’ trails, and guided us closer to these giants—all while keeping a safe distance.

In addition to rhino tracking, there are plenty of other tours to book, such as Bushman tours, meerkat tours, horseback rides through the reserve, and more. You can also request custom tours tailored to your interests.
For those who prefer independent exploration, you can stroll through the reserve on your own or simply relax and soak in the atmosphere.

The minimum stay at Kuzikus is three days, which is essential to fully immerse yourself in this extraordinary place. We loved it so much that we will definitely return! If you’re planning a Namibia itinerary, you should definitely include Kuzikus on your list.
